Description

Christian! and Jaun Zuria Swearing to Defend the Independence of Bizkaia are the largest easel paintings Anselmo Guinea ever made. He chose this unusual format based on the fact that he was painting it for the 1897 International Exhibition. At that time, it was no longer surprising that an artist would devote so many square metres of canvas to a Costumbrist painting, although several decades earlier they would only have been used for a historical painting.

In early spring 1897, before being sent to Madrid, the recently finished work was exhibited in the courtyard of the Arts and Crafts School of Bilbao, where anyone who wanted to could come admire it. In Madrid, it was involved in a serious accident while the exhibition was being set up. Darío de Regoyos remembers that 'it was slaughtered in the murder room of Madrid, and we say slaughtered because they let it fall over a step ladder, which entirely pierced the canvas, making a one-metre hole in the shape of a cross'. Guinea had to travel urgently to Madrid to restore it, and the state indemnified him 700 pesetas for the contretemps. Afterwards, Regoyos continues, 'to make the sacrifice complete, the painting was installed in a place with no light, so nobody saw it'.

The appropriateness of painting from life was still one of the main concerns of the usual critics of national shows, who did recognise the qualities of Christian!, but still looked poorly or even in astonishment upon the use of certain painting resources. Silverio de la Torre, for example, was not convinced by the intonation of the figures and objects in the foreground, which, he said, 'is so green that this uniform tone detracts from the vigour of the foreground primarily and makes it seem like you're seeing the painting wearing green glasses but wanting to take them off to see all the good that there is in it'. The less benevolent critics included F. Fuentes Iriarte, who not only praised the composition and execution of the figures but also claimed that 'Guinea's canvas is—why not admit it?—the best in this show despite its major flaws'. Among these flaws, he found that the painter had allowed himself to be 'influenced by the impression of the sun on the background landscape, whereas Mr Guinea could have understood that it's impossible to see in nature either the general yellowish and red blotch seen in his painting or the series of points that he used in that unfortunate background lacking all artfulness or spontaneity to achieve this effect'. Not content with his judgement, he concluded that the artist should leave behind 'poorly understood impressionism and paint the way he knows how to, without extravagances, which are always worthy of censure'.

The next year, the painting was presented at the Exhibition of Fine Arts and Artistic Industries of Barcelona, where, according to Regoyos, 'it was highly celebrated by artists and critics alike'. Apart from a few critical opinions, it did inspire warm words of congratulation. Better understanding of the work could be expected in a city that was more used to Parisian influences, although the unreserved applause of the controversial background is somehow surprising: 'This originally toned painting is striking because of the perfection of the colours in the background, directly under the sun, which is treated with extraordinary boldness and semi-pointillist facture', wrote the critic in La Dinastía with delight.
