Description

The year of his first sojourn in Paris, Guinea painted this work set in Murueta, a town in Vizcaya. With the Gernika stream and a luminous landscape of mountains and farmhouses in the background, men and women from different generations are toiling to weed the maize. Behind them, a couple is using spades to clear the land. The horizontal format reinforces the calm feel of the scene, which is painted in blue, grey and green tones, seemly to make the hard farmwork appear effortless. In the foreground, an aged man and a boy holding grain plants show how the land and its associated values are transmitted from parents to children. (BBKateak)
